Mathematics
Intent
At Holywell Green Primary School, we believe that mathematics is an essential part of everyday life and provides children with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to understand and make sense of the world around them.
Our intention is for all children to become confident, resilient and enthusiastic mathematicians who develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts and are able to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts. We want children to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics and understand that making mistakes and learning from them are important parts of the learning process.
Our mathematics curriculum is based on White Rose Maths, which provides a carefully sequenced progression of mathematical knowledge and skills from Early Years through to the end of Key Stage 2. This enables children to build secure foundations before moving on to increasingly challenging mathematical concepts.
We place a strong emphasis on the development of the three key areas of mathematical learning:
- Fluency – developing accuracy, efficiency and confidence with number and calculation.
- Reasoning – explaining mathematical thinking, making connections and justifying answers.
- Problem-solving – applying mathematical knowledge to unfamiliar and increasingly complex situations.
We believe that children need to develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematics, rather than simply learning procedures. Children are therefore given opportunities to use practical resources, representations and visual models before progressing towards increasingly abstract mathematical thinking.
Our curriculum develops children's ability to recognise patterns and relationships, make connections between areas of mathematics and apply what they know in new situations. Vocabulary and mathematical language are explicitly taught so that children can explain their thinking clearly and communicate mathematically.
We aim for all children to develop the confidence and independence to tackle challenging mathematics. Where children experience difficulty, teaching is adapted to address misconceptions and strengthen understanding, rather than simply moving children on to new content.
It is our intention that all children leave Holywell Green Primary School with a secure and positive mathematical foundation, enabling them to access the next stage of their education and use mathematics confidently in everyday life.
Implementation
Mathematics is taught daily and as separate year groups, ensuring that teaching is closely matched to the National Curriculum expectations for each year group.
Our curriculum is based on the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a clear and progressive sequence of learning. Teachers use White Rose planning and resources as the foundation for teaching, while adapting lessons and activities to respond to the needs, prior knowledge and attainment of their pupils.
Lessons follow a carefully sequenced progression, with new learning building on previously taught knowledge. Teachers regularly revisit important mathematical concepts through retrieval and practice to support long-term retention.
Our teaching places emphasis on the concrete–pictorial–abstract approach. Children are given opportunities to explore mathematical ideas using practical resources before moving to pictorial representations and, where appropriate, abstract notation and formal methods.
Children are taught to:
- develop fluency and automaticity with key mathematical facts;
- use mathematical vocabulary accurately;
- explain their mathematical thinking;
- reason and justify their answers;
- identify and correct misconceptions;
- apply mathematical knowledge to solve problems;
- make connections between different areas of mathematics;
- select appropriate methods and representations;
- work independently and collaboratively;
- persevere when faced with challenging problems.
Planning and progression
- We use White Rose Maths as the basis for our long-term and medium-term planning.
- Planning follows the National Curriculum and the progression of knowledge and skills identified within White Rose Maths.
- Teachers use the White Rose sequence to ensure that mathematical knowledge is taught in a logical order and that new learning builds on prior knowledge.
- Lessons are adapted where necessary to meet the needs of individual pupils and to address gaps in prior learning.
- Teachers identify the small steps of learning within each unit and ensure that children have sufficient opportunities to secure understanding before progressing.
- Key mathematical vocabulary and representations are explicitly taught and revisited.
- Regular retrieval and practice are used to strengthen children's recall of number facts, calculation strategies and previously taught concepts.
Fluency, reasoning and problem-solving
Fluency is developed through regular practice and purposeful repetition. Children develop their knowledge of number facts, times tables and calculation strategies so that they can use these efficiently when solving problems.
Reasoning is embedded within lessons rather than taught as a separate strand. Children are regularly asked to explain how they know, identify errors, compare methods, prove statements and justify their answers.
Problem-solving opportunities enable children to apply their mathematical knowledge in unfamiliar contexts. Children are encouraged to choose appropriate strategies, persevere when problems are challenging and reflect on whether their solutions are reasonable.
Assessment and responsive teaching
Assessment is an integral part of mathematics teaching. Teachers use questioning, discussion, observation, independent work and other assessment opportunities to identify what children understand and where misconceptions or gaps remain.
Teachers use this information to provide responsive teaching, adapting the pace, representation, questioning or level of challenge where necessary.
Children who require additional support are given appropriate scaffolding and opportunities to revisit prerequisite knowledge, while children who demonstrate secure understanding are provided with opportunities to reason more deeply and apply their knowledge in increasingly challenging contexts.
Through this approach, we aim to ensure that children develop secure, connected and transferable mathematical knowledge, rather than simply completing a sequence of lessons.
Our implementation of White Rose Maths therefore provides a consistent whole-school approach whilst allowing teachers the professional flexibility to respond to the needs of their individual year groups and pupils.
